TikTok's CEO pledged to challenge the new US law that requires the app to cut ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or else it will be banned in the United States.
“Rest assured, we are not going anywhere,” Xu Ziqiu said Wednesday in a video message. “We will continue to fight in the courts for your rights. The facts and the Constitution are on our side.”
The platform’s CEO warned: “Make no mistake, this is a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice.”
He continued: “Many of those who sponsored the bill admitted that the ultimate goal is to ban TikTok.”
Chiu described the move as “ironic” given that freedom of expression on TikTok adheres to the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom.
It is noteworthy that the law, which could lead to a rare step of preventing a company from operating in the American market, was approved by the Senate by a majority of 79 votes to 18, three days after the House of Representatives approved it with strong bipartisan support.
Under the law, ByteDance would have to sell the app or remove it from the Apple and Google app stores in the United States.
For years, TikTok has been in the crosshairs of US authorities who say the app allows Beijing to spy on users in the United States.
