The Thai government calls on ASEAN to work more actively on Myanmar issues

On Friday, April 26, the Thai government urged ASEAN to participate more actively in resolving the Myanmar issue.

The Thai government made the request after weeks of fighting near the Thai-Myanmar border halted trade and caused a flood of refugees to enter Thailand.

Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said ASEAN needs to do more because the fighting in Myawaddy is so close to their border.

He also said that he discussed the Myanmar issue with Laos, the chairman of ASEAN, and with the Myanmar Military Council.

The fighting that took place in Myawati on April 11 came as a blow to the Burmese Military Council, which is struggling to govern the country.

The revolutionary forces have withdrawn their troops and a ceasefire has been reached, but only a few of the 3,000 people who fled to Thailand on April 20 have returned to Burma.

After the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, ethnic armed groups, The revolutionary forces and the army of the military coup d'état became a civil war.

He said that the Myanmar Military Council had agreed on 5 ASEAN Common Agreements to resolve the Myanmar issue, but only partially implemented them, causing irritation among the members.
