Serious diseases indicated by high hemoglobin levels

The main function of hemoglobin, which is an iron-containing protein, is to deliver oxygen to all organs and tissues of the body, and to take carbon dioxide and transport it to the lungs.

Dr. Elzara Temirbaeva, speaking to Gazeta news, indicates that a high level of hemoglobin in the blood may indicate serious diseases, such as kidney cancer and liver cancer.

She says: “The normal level of hemoglobin depends primarily on the gender of the person, as its level in men’s blood is higher because they have a large muscle mass that needs a greater amount of oxygen. While its level in women is lower due to monthly blood loss during menstruation.”

According to her, high hemoglobin has characteristic signs - decreased performance, drowsiness, fatigue and dizziness, accompanied by the appearance of a (pink veil before the eyes), pain in the head and joints, pain and cramps in the abdomen, peeling and itching of the skin. Another typical symptom is the appearance of extensive hematomas even after a minor injury.

The doctor points out that these signs usually appear when a person exercises and exercises or when he does work that requires physical effort, and they disappear the rest of the time, so it is easy to diagnose the cause.

She says: “A high hemoglobin level does not necessarily indicate disease. The hemoglobin level in mountain climbers, pilots, people who live high in the mountains, as well as smokers is usually high. Because this is the way the body tries to compensate for the lack of oxygen. In addition, the hemoglobin concentration sometimes increases.” Due to dehydration or food poisoning.

But in certain cases, high hemoglobin levels in the blood indicate diseases that require accurate diagnosis and treatment. Among the causes of high hemoglobin levels are excessive production of red blood cells, heart and respiratory failure, cancer of the adrenal gland, kidneys, and liver, and high iron levels. Also, a high hemoglobin level may indicate an increased concentration of vitamins B6 and B12.

The doctor advises performing a comprehensive blood test if signs of high hemoglobin levels appear, to diagnose the cause and prescribe the necessary treatment.
