Egypt : Citizens are required to close windows due to flies carrying dangerous diseases

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority issued an important statement warning citizens of “the spread of desert flies that accompanied the Khamasin winds that Egypt was exposed to yesterday, Wednesday.”

She advised the need to close windows tightly to prevent flies from entering homes.

Dr. Muhammad Amin, professor of insects at the College of Agriculture, explained that desert flies feed on garbage, and some species feed on anything fermented, such as agricultural waste. Their size does not exceed a quarter of a centimeter, and they take on many colors, including blue, brown, and black.

In exclusive statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Amin pointed out that desert flies appear with the activity of the Khamaseen winds and extremely hot weather, inflict painful bites on humans, and can transmit some diseases such as anthrax and viral encephalitis. They also affect animal production by reducing the amount of milk produced. Produced by cows, it also threatens food security by destroying agricultural crops.

Amin explained that desert flies can be controlled by spraying insecticides and using fly traps, with the necessity of tightly closing windows to prevent them from entering residential apartments.

The General Authority of Meteorology revealed the weather conditions expected today in the governorates and cities, as hot weather prevails during the day in Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, South Sinai, and North Upper Egypt, very hot in South Upper Egypt, warm on the northern coasts, and inclined to cold at night in the north of the country, and even in northern Upper Egypt, moderate in South Sinai.
