The Swedish authorities decided to restart the suspended Öresund Sverket power station in Malmö, to ensure uninterrupted energy supply in the event of attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
Bloomberg quoted the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Mikael Nilsson, as saying: “No matter how strong and prepared the armed forces are, they will not be able to carry out our duty to the fullest extent, if we do not secure the necessary support from civil defense.”
Bloomberg wrote that the decision was taken against the backdrop of the Swedish authorities’ concerns about the possibility of attacks on vital infrastructure facilities in the country.
Both Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in 2022. Finland gained membership in the alliance in 2023 and Sweden this year.
