A Japanese city with stunning views of the iconic Mount Fuji has been overrun by tourists, prompting local authorities to erect a barrier to block the scenic view of the holy site.
CNN reported that the city of Fujikawaguchiko, located in Yamanashi Prefecture, about 62 miles west of the capital, Tokyo, at the foot of the Yoshida Road leading to Mount Fuji, has become crowded with foreigners looking for the perfect photo of the mountain.
The most popular shot on social media of the mountain is filmed in front of Lawson, a Japanese department store chain, with the mountain in the background, highlighting the stark contrast between the fluorescent-lit store and the gorgeous landscape.
So city officials, tired of the crowds of tourists, decided to erect a giant mesh barrier to block the view, hoping to dissuade enthusiastic photo enthusiasts from overrunning the site.
One of the officials told CNN that large numbers of tourists leave garbage in their wake and face problems following traffic instructions, noting that placing signs and deploying security guards did not have any positive results.
The Japanese official added: "It is unfortunate that we had to take such measures."
The network, which is 8 feet long (about 3 meters), is expected to be installed over an area extending 66 feet (about 21 meters) next week.
