What happens to your body whenever you touch your toes without bending your knees?

“Modern sedentary office life has created a myriad of problems for people's strength and flexibility,” says British flexibility and movement coach Roger Frampton in his book The Flexible Body.

To show the danger of the gradual weakening of our ability to move, due to the predominance of sitting in most of our daily activities, and the effects it leaves on our health that may reach the point of early death.

Over a period of 9 years (from 2002 to 2011), Brazilian researchers followed more than two thousand people, between the ages of 51 and 80, who participated in a test that required sitting on the floor and then standing again, but without using the arms or knees. They found that those who failed to sit up and stand up were “5 to 6 times more likely to die early.” This confirms that “losing the ability to conscious movement is very dangerous, especially as we age,” according to Frampton, who told the Guardian newspaper that “there is no need to worry” as long as there is a way to maintain our movement, by doing some simple exercises.

Touching the toes is one of 11 tests used by Canadian doctor and author Peter Attia to “measure the level of physical fitness of those who visit his clinic.”
