The World Food Program warned that if its teams were unable to enter Gaza, thousands of children would die of hunger, noting that it was about to declare a “famine” in the northern Gaza Strip, calling for the necessary measures to be taken before it occurs.
The United Nations World Food Program revealed, on Monday, the poor conditions in Gaza, warning that “death from starvation” would be the fate of thousands of children if the program’s crews were unable to enter the northern Strip.
WFP's Chief Economist Arif Hussein, via video conference, provided information to journalists at the United Nations about the Integrated Food Security Interim Classification (IPC) report.
Hussein pointed out, "Children are dying of hunger in the Gaza Strip, especially in the north."
Hussein explained that the program is “on the verge of declaring famine” in northern Gaza.
He added: "For humanitarian relief workers, famine means declaring our collective failure. It means that we failed and people and children died of hunger."
Hussein called for the need to take the necessary measures before famine occurs.
He stressed that "children are dying of hunger" throughout Gaza.
He pointed out: “If we are not able to enter northern Gaza, not 20-30 children will die, but thousands of them. We cannot allow that.”
The “Integrated Phase Classification of Food Security” (IPC) report, prepared by United Nations institutions, showed that 70% of the population of the northern Gaza Strip face “catastrophic hunger.”
