Nashville police announced that several people were killed when a light plane crashed on a highway in the city.
The plane crashed outside the eastbound lanes after the Charlotte Pike exit, police said, adding that it has not been determined where it took off.
American media reported that the plane, which departed from Huntsville, Alabama, suffered an engine failure during its flight.
The Airport Authority, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration said they would investigate.
According to information, the pilot had requested emergency permission to land, and his intended destination was Nashville Airport. Due to the plane's weak condition, it was unable to reach the runway in time.
No injuries to drivers were reported on the highway, said Kendra Looney, a spokeswoman for the Nashville Fire Department. No vehicles or buildings were damaged.
