Two Venezuelans arrested on charges of preparing to assassinate Maduro

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced that two Venezuelan citizens were arrested in Monagas state for spreading threats and conspiring to assassinate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“Two people were arrested on March 11 for spreading very serious threats and once again inciting the assassination of President Nicolas Maduro during his stay in Maturin,” Saab said.

He added that the detainees are Renzo Flores, a deserter sergeant from the National Guard, and Wilver Jose Peña from the political organization “COS R.” Saab indicated that they are members of the political organization “Together for Monagas.”

During an examination of the detainees' mobile phones, it was revealed that there were talks about recruiting 50 soldiers to seize weapons and organize a rebellion.

The Venezuelan Attorney General's Office intends to file charges against the detainees with criminal conspiracy and attempted murder in the coming hours.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced last January that five right-wing opposition "plots" would be thwarted in 2023, including plans to assassinate him. Maduro also spoke at the time about thwarting plans to assassinate Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez, senior military leaders, and Tachira state governor Freddy Bernal.
