Semarang - Assistant for Economics and Development at the Central Java Regional Secretariat, Sujarwanto Dwiatmoko, said that the two international airports in the province do not yet have regular direct flights to and from abroad.
According to Sujarwanto in Semarang, Tuesday, the two airports that have international status are Semarang's Ahmad Yani Airport and Surakarta's Adi Soemarmo Airport.
"Because of their international status, we really want these two airports to be used for international flights," he said.
The Central Java Provincial Government has pushed for direct international flights to these two airports, but these have not been provided.
According to him, many foreign tourists come through Yogyakarta International Airport and then also enjoy tourist destinations in Central Java.
Meanwhile, the Central Java Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that of the six airports spread across various regions in this province, only two airports serve passenger arrivals and departures, namely Semarang and Surakarta Airports.
Head of Central Java BPS Dadang Hardiwan said passenger arrivals through the two airports during January 2024 were recorded at 122,636 people.
Of this number, he continued, there were 1,293 international flight passengers bound for Jeddah.
Direct flights to Saudi Arabia from Surakarta Airport are only to serve Umrah pilgrims with scheduled departures every weekend.
Meanwhile, aircraft passenger arrivals during January 2024 were recorded at 114,128 people, with 1,057 passengers being Umrah pilgrims from Jeddah.
