As the holy month of Ramadan begins this week, a Sudanese army general has ruled out the idea of ​​a truce during the fast if the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) do not vacate civilian and public sites.

Deputy army commander Yasser al-Atta spoke after a call for a ceasefire from the United Nations Security Council. The army had just claimed advances in Ondurman and part of the capital.

Atta, whose statement was released on the army's official Telegram channel on Sunday, said there can only be a Ramadan ceasefire if the Rapid Support Forces respect the commitment taken last May during the Jeddah talks under Saudi and American mediation.

The RSF had guaranteed to withdraw from civilian homes and public facilities, and pledged that Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces, would play no role in Sudan's politics or military in the future. future.

The war between the Sudanese army and Sudanese security forces erupted in mid-April 2023, amid tensions over a plan to transition to civilian rule.

According to the United Nations, nearly 25 million people, half of Sudan's population, are in need of aid, some 8 million have fled their homes and hunger is increasing . Washington accuses both warring parties of committing war crimes.
