Jakarta - UAE Team cyclist Tadej Pogacar recorded a historic victory after a solo attack of 81 kilometers to finish at Strade Bianche, Italy, Saturday (2/3).
Quoted from AFP, Sunday, this is the furthest solo attack ever carried out by a bicycle racer at the event held in Tuscan, Siena, during the last 17 years.
Apart from that, this is also Pogacar's first win and race in the 2024 season, before he tries to achieve another championship target in the near future, namely at the Giro d'Italia-Tour de France.
The racer from Slovenia finished 2 minutes 44 seconds ahead of Toms Skujins, breaking the previous victory record set by Fabian Cancellara in 2012. The 2024 Strade Bianche podium was completed with Maxim van Gils in third position.
The 25-year-old cyclist started the 2024 season strongly, having ended the previous campaign with a hat-trick win at Il Lombardia in October.
At this Strade Bianche event, Pogacar said his main strategy was to attack directly from the start, leave his group and race alone for more than two hours before finally winning the race with a distance of 215 km in the Tuscan countryside.
“The conditions were very difficult There was a moment when I couldn't see anything and I decided to attack,” said Pogacar.
Pogacar received a standing ovation from fans as he crossed the line in Siena's Piazza del Campo, dismounting his bike and lifting it into the air to celebrate a big win against a strong team that also included reigning Ineos champion Tom Pidcock, who finished the race in fourth.
Fans considered Pogacar's solo attack to be more impressive than when he won the same event for the first time, two years ago.
At that time, he carried out a solo attack from a distance of 50 km and received no reply from his competitors.
It's marking a powerful season start with an impressive, record-breaking victory.
