More than 10,000 people evacuated due to floods in Kazakhstan

The Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies announced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people, half of them children, in 7 regions this March, due to floods resulting from the rapid melting of snow.

A statement issued by the ministry’s press office said: “In the regions of Turkestan, Aktopinsk, Kostanay, West Kazakhstan, Akmola, Ulitau and Abay, 10,587 people were evacuated, including 5,101 children. There are 5,497 people in temporary residence centers, including 1,739 children.”

Earlier, Kazakh Prime Minister Olgas Bektinov said that the current floods in the country are the largest in recent years.

The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan warned yesterday, Saturday, of imposing restrictions on traffic in certain directions on the border between Russia and Kazakhstan due to the floods.
