Media: The Pentagon approves allowing the F-35E fighter to carry nuclear weapons

The American F-35E fifth-generation fighter has received official certification to carry nuclear weapons, the Breaking Defense electronic newspaper reported.

The newspaper said, quoting the official representative of the F-35E aircraft production program, that the certificate allows the carrying of the “B61-12” thermonuclear bomb only, and it was received on October 12, 2023, ahead of schedule.

The certificate does not allow the F-35B vertical take-off and landing fighter and the F-35C fighter to carry a thermonuclear bomb.

The first sample of the B61 nuclear bomb was adopted into service in 1968. The modified B61-12 bomb was released in the United States in November 2021.
