Kenya: Opponent Ekuru Aukot blocks the sending of police officers to Haiti

In Kenya, an opposition leader contests the sending of Kenyan soldiers to Haiti. On Wednesday, Ekuru Aukot announced he would launch a new legal challenge against plans to send Kenyan police forces to gang-ravaged Haiti.

He believes that the agreement between President William Ruto and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry was invalid. Because he has not yet responded to the objections of the judge who blocked the deployment last January.

This blockage followed a complaint filed by Aukot's party.

Last week, Kenya reached an agreement with Haitian authorities to accelerate the arrival of soldiers in Haiti as part of an international mission to support the country's security.

President Ruto confirmed the deal with Prime Minister Henry on Friday, but his government provided no timetable – yet.

Armed gangs have been controlling and sowing terror in Haiti for many months and the situation is completely beyond the control of local authorities.
