Some people can suffer from severe and persistent dehydration during the month of Ramadan as a result of not drinking enough fluids at iftar and suhoor time.
Health experts revealed that you should drink water in balance throughout the iftar and suhoor periods, to stay hydrated throughout the day.
It is also recommended to limit drinking coffee and tea (diuretics) throughout the breakfast period, especially since these drinks can cause dehydration faster. If you're worried about gaining weight during Ramadan, stay away from sugary, calorie-rich drinks during iftar, and stick to plain lemon water or cucumber water.
Below are the most important tips to avoid thirst during Ramadan fasting:
- Do not drink too much water during suhoor
A misconception has spread that drinking a lot of water at suhoor helps overcome thirst during the fasting period, but the scientific truth is that the kidneys in the human body get rid of water after hours.
Medical recommendations advise distributing drinking water in large quantities between iftar and suhoor, to maintain the body’s hydration during the fasting period.
- Eat cucumber and watermelon
Experts revealed that cucumbers contain 95% water, and there are many fruits that contain water, such as watermelon, apples, oranges, and grapes.
- Avoid drinking coffee
Experts advise limiting coffee intake to reduce its side effects. It is preferable to ensure that you drink coffee in moderation, and that the daily amount does not exceed 4 small cups of coffee.
Experts also advise reducing carbonated water, especially at breakfast, because it gives a feeling of fullness and harms the digestion process.
- Natural drinks
It is recommended to avoid hot cocoa and energy drinks during the suhoor period, to avoid thirst during the fasting period.
You can drink green tea and natural juices such as cranberry, which reduce the feeling of thirst.
- Avoid salty foods
Health experts advise reducing salt in food, as well as limiting the intake of highly salty or spicy foods, such as pickles, olives, salted fish, and flavored French potatoes, because they increase the feeling of thirst during the day.
One must be careful to eat foods with moderate saltiness, and avoid salty foods such as ready-made meals and some cheeses, especially during the suhoor period, as salt increases the feeling of thirst.
