In an interview with the Deutsche Welle Group, an informed source ruled out that the European Union summit scheduled for March 21 and 22 would reach an agreement on the use of proceeds from Russian frozen assets due to Hungary’s position.
According to a high-ranking European official, most EU member states support spending this money to finance the purchase of weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainian forces, but Hungary opposes this, stressing that the income from the assets should go “to anything, but not to the purchase of weapons.” .
Earlier, the European Commission approved a proposal to use proceeds from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Now this matter will be considered at the EU summit on March 21-22.
On March 20, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, reported that this proposal includes using 90% of the proceeds from the frozen assets to purchase missiles for Ukraine.
Borrell noted that the remaining 10% will go to the EU budget for subsequent support of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex.
It is known that Moscow has constantly warned Western countries of the consequences of their use of frozen Russian assets.
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said earlier that Russia has all the tools to respond to this step.
