CNN, citing two White House officials, reported that at the end of 2022, after a report from Western intelligence, Washington prepared for the possibility of Russia launching a nuclear strike on Ukraine.
The two officials said that Washington was concerned last summer about the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in the northeastern military region. The National Security Council met at the White House several times between the summer and fall of last year to develop a contingency plan in the event of a nuclear attack on Ukraine.
The channel also confirmed at the same time that the US intelligence services themselves did not find intelligence information indicating that Russia is taking steps to mobilize nuclear forces to launch such an attack.
One CNN source noted: “We naturally placed great importance on tracking the movements of Russian nuclear forces . Not once did we see any signs of the steps we expected them [the Russians] to take if they wanted to use nuclear weapons.”
US President Joe Biden said in the summer of 2023 that there was no possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
