Meta and its platforms, Instagram and Facebook, are accused of facilitating the illegal sale of medicines and making profits from it. According to the Wall Street Journal, this prompted federal prosecutors to open a criminal investigation in 2023.
The American Wall Street Journal revealed that the Meta Group and its platforms, Instagram and Facebook, are suspected of facilitating and making profits from illegal drug sales, prompting federal prosecutors to open a criminal investigation in 2023.
The newspaper relied on documents and people close to the case, saying that subpoenas and interrogations were carried out as part of the procedures before a grand jury.
The source said the jury must decide whether the two Meta platforms "facilitate and profit from illegal drug sales" and should therefore be prosecuted.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports this federal investigation, according to the Wall Street Journal, which confirms that it has seen the subpoenas issued in 2023.
A Meta spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal: “Illegal drug sales are against our policy, and we are working to find this content and remove it from our services.”
“META proactively cooperates with law enforcement authorities to help combat the illegal sale and distribution of medicines,” she added.
More than 700,000 people died between 1999 and 2022 in the United States due to overdoses related to taking opioids obtained by prescription or illegally, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
