De La Fuente extends his contract with the Spanish Federation until 2026
Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente has extended his contract with the local football federation until 2026, which means that he will lead “La Roja” during the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Spanish Federation said in a statement on Thursday that extending De La Fuente's (62-year-old) contract was necessary "to ensure stability for the national team, which is preparing to compete in the European Cup next June."
The Spanish coach's contract was to expire on June 30, that is, in the middle of the Spanish national team's participation in the European Cup, which Germany will host from June 14 to July 14.
De la Fuente was appointed head of the Spanish national team's technical staff at the end of 2022, after a disappointing exit from the quarter-finals of the World Cup hosted by Qatar, in which Argentina won its title at the expense of France.
De La Fuente led the La Roja team in ten matches, winning nine and losing once.
De La Fuente has previously coached Spain's national teams in the under-23, 21 and 19 age groups since 2013, and before that Alaves in 2011 and Athletic Bilbao twice.
