Namibian President Hage Geingob died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, the capital, where he was being treated for cancer. The announcement was made by the presidency in a message on the social network X.
The message specifies that he left, surrounded by his wife, Monica Geingos, and his children. He was 82 years old. His health was far from smooth sailing in recent years. In 2013, Hage Geingob had brain surgery.
While in 2014, he said he had survived prostate cancer before undergoing aortic surgery in South Africa last year.
In power since 2015, Hage Geingob was due to complete his last term this year.
The interim head of state is Angolo Mbumba. He called on the population to calm down. Elections will be held in Namibia in November.
Senegal: President Macky Sall announces the indefinite postponement of the February 25 presidential election
The Senegalese will no longer be called to the polls on February 25 as planned. The presidential vote was postponed indefinitely by a decree signed on Saturday by President Macky Sall. It repeals that of November 26, 2023 setting the presidential election for February 25 of this year.
At the center of this postponement, the establishment of a parliamentary commission investigating two judges of the Constitutional Court accused of corruption by the party of Karim Wade whose presidential candidacy was rejected for ''not having renounced his French nationality on time.
In total, at least 40 application files were rejected by the Constitutional Court, including that of Ousmane Sonko who is serving a six-month sentence for defamation.
This decision was announced a few hours before the opening of the electoral campaign.
On Saturday, Macky Sall reiterated his decision not to seek a new mandate while announcing the convening of an “inclusive” national dialogue. It must create the conditions for a “free, transparent and inclusive” election.
