In these two decades, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg transformed from a geek boy into a Silicon Valley billionaire. The product he created has undergone an equally astonishing transformation.
Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004, and at the time, the site was intended to replace the real Facebook, which was a paper bulletin featuring Harvard students and teachers.
However, compared to the modern version of the site, the early site may seem quite barebones, as there was no newsfeed, no timeline or status updates, and only one photo per profile.
When Facebook first launched, users needed a @harvard.edu email address to be able to register, although throughout 2004 it spread to other universities as well, including Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge.
The site did not become available to the general public until 2006, and anyone over the age of 13 can sign up for the first time.
However, in those years between the founding of the site and its opening to the public, many major changes were made, and Facebook dropped the “definite” from its name after purchasing the domain facebook for $200,000.
The other big change occurred on February 5, 2006, just 20 days before Facebook opened to the world, when the site added the first version of the newsfeed.
With this change, this was the first time that Facebook became more than just a collection of profiles and groups.
Another classic feature you might remember from the Facebook era was the poke button.
On an early FAQ page from 2005, Facebook said the poke button was created because “we thought it would be fun to create a feature that had no specific purpose and see what happens next.”
But this pointless feature has proven to be very popular with users, sending a wave of digital pokes.
2008 was a year of distinctive developments for Facebook, as the company launched Facebook Chat, a messaging service that was developed into a version of Messenger.
In 2009, the home page got some cosmetic updates and the timeline began updating in real time.
In 2010, Facebook got a notifications tab for the first time in the top navigation bar.
In 2011, Facebook underwent another major overhaul that eliminated some old features. He added a visual timeline that allows Facebook users to tell the story of their lives from their birth to the present day.
In the past decade or so, Facebook has introduced a number of new features that have added different functionality to the site. In 2015, Facebook Live was introduced.
Facebook introduced filters in Messenger, an in-app camera, and Facebook Stories, all of which appear to have originated with Snapchat.
More recently, in 2022, Facebook launched its short video service: Reels.
Facebook is now facing criticism that its algorithm is responsible for promoting harmful and inflammatory content.
In a US Senate hearing, the Facebook algorithm was accused of promoting child sexual abuse material.
Zuckerberg apologized to the families who said their children were harmed by the social site, but insisted that the company was doing its best to protect young users.
Samsung continues its cooperation with Qualcomm to obtain advanced processors
Some technology websites reported that Samsung has signed new agreements with Qualcomm to obtain Snapdragon processors for upcoming Galaxy phones.
According to available information, the new agreements will ensure cooperation between the two companies for several years to come, in order to use Snapdragon processors produced by Qualcomm in the next generations of Galaxy phones that will be manufactured by Samsung.
Last year, Samsung used Snapdragon processors in all of its leading Galaxy phones, and this year these processors appeared in the Galaxy S24 Ultra phones. As for the Galaxy S24 and S24+ phones, they used Samsung processors. Despite this shift, it is not expected that Samsung’s reliance on Qualcomm processors in the coming years, and the latter indicated that it has signed agreements with Samsung to supply the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series of phones with its processors starting in 2024, and that these devices will receive advanced Snapdragon chips.
On the other hand, some reports indicated that Samsung is also working on developing a new generation of “Dream Chip” processors that it will use in the upcoming Galaxy S25 phones, and that these processors will be developed using 3 nm technology, and these processors will contain ARM Cortex-X5 CPU cores, and CPU cores. Cortex-A720, Cortex-A530 CPU cores, and Xclipse 950 integrated graphics processor.
