US Central Command announced in a statement on Friday evening that two American sailors were reported missing while conducting operations Thursday off the coast of Somalia.

Central Command said search and rescue operations were continuing to "locate" the missing persons, adding that they were among the sailors who were "deployed to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet area of ​​operations in support of a wide range of missions," without providing further details.

The United States maintains a limited military presence in Somalia, focused on the threat posed by the extremist Al-Shabaab movement, which has carried out attacks against the Somali government.

 Washington classifies the Al-Shabaab movement as a “terrorist organization,” and in addition to training Somali forces, the United States also coordinated with the government to carry out strikes against the movement .

The US Navy's Fifth Fleet participated in carrying out the strikes in which the United States and its allies targeted sites of the "Ansar Allah" (Houthis) movement in Yemen on Thursday night - Friday.

It is noteworthy that Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip in response to a large-scale attack by the Hamas movement on Israeli cities and settlements on October 7.
