US Central Command announced in a statement on Friday evening that two American sailors were reported missing while conducting operations Thursday off the coast of Somalia.
Central Command said search and rescue operations were continuing to "locate" the missing persons, adding that they were among the sailors who were "deployed to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet area of operations in support of a wide range of missions," without providing further details.
The United States maintains a limited military presence in Somalia, focused on the threat posed by the extremist Al-Shabaab movement, which has carried out attacks against the Somali government.
