A Palestinian prisoner who was recently released said that Israeli prisons have become exact copies of the Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo detainees, in reference to the torture to which the prisoners are subjected.
Louay Al-Taweel (37 years old), from the city of Hebron in the south of the West Bank, spoke of the “torture, humiliation, and deprivation of food and medicine” that he faced in Israeli prisons.
Al-Taweel described the Negev prison as an exact copy of the Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo prisons, which are “notorious symbols” of American human rights violations.
Al-Tawil was arrested on October 20, and an administrative sentence was issued against him to 6 months in prison. He was imprisoned in Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah, before he was transferred to Negev Prison.
According to data from institutions concerned with prisoners’ affairs, the Israeli authorities have arrested 5,630 people since the start of the war on Gaza on October 7. This tally does not include arrests carried out by Israeli forces inside the Gaza Strip.
It should be noted that the United States established the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Guantanamo Bay, southeast of Cuba, following the attacks of September 11, 2001. None of the human rights laws apply to it, to the extent that Amnesty International said that the detention center represents “the barbarism of this era.”
As for “Abu Ghraib” prison, currently called “Baghdad Central Prison,” it is located near the city of Abu Ghraib, 32 kilometers west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. It was famous for its use by the international coalition forces led by the United States and the mistreatment of prisoners inside it.
