Mexico withdraws from the competition to host the 2036 Olympics

Mexico has withdrawn from the bidding race to organize the 2036 Olympic Games, leaving the competition between four countries that have so far announced their desire to host: India, Poland, Turkey and Indonesia.

The President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Maria Jose Alcala, said on Tuesday, “We had a discussion with the International Olympic Committee and saw that the competition is very difficult,” without revealing further details.

Mexico announced its candidacy to host in October 2022, wanting to host the games again for the first time in 54 years when it organized the 1968 Olympics.

In the same context, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that his country is “a sporting power that will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026,” jointly with the United States and Canada, adding that “it is the only country to host it three times” after the 1970 and 1986 editions.

India, which has never hosted the Olympic Games before, aspires to become the fourth Asian country to receive this honor, after Japan, South Korea and China.

Turkey, Indonesia and Poland have also so far submitted their bids to host the 2036 Olympic Games, noting that the next three editions will be in Paris (2024), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane, Australia in 2032.
