Doctors said that those who were prescribed both drugs were generally more at risk of any complications, including death.

Complications can be recorded up to 28 days after Viagra is prescribed to patients already receiving nitrates.

In an editorial accompanying the study, researchers said it was "reasonably safe" to take Viagra 24 hours after nitrate use among patients with ischemic heart disease and mild angina. But for those who need to take nitrates regularly, they said using Viagra is "unwise" and "not recommended."

Limitations of the study included that scientists were not sure when the men took the two prescribed medications.

The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
