United States: 40 months imprisonment for a band leader
A former lieutenant in the far-right Proud Boys band was sentenced for conspiring to prevent US President Joe Biden from becoming president on January 6, 2021, to 40 months in prison.
Charles Donohue, 35, was the first of the Proud Boys leadership to plead guilty and assisted prosecutors in their case, leading to the conviction of several of the group's leaders for seditious conspiracy.
Donohue pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on charges of conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding on January 6 and assaulting an officer by throwing two water bottles at police during the riot.
During Donohoe's sentencing, District Attorney Jason McCullough noted his "contribution to the investigation of the group's leadership and their plot to stop Biden's election," adding that Donohoe provided details of "the scope of that conspiracy."
Prosecutors requested a significant reduction in Donohue's sentence because of his cooperation, which Judge Timothy Kelly agreed to.
Donohue has already served nearly 38 months of his 40-month sentence.
McCullough said that on January 6, Donohoe "served as the eyes and ears" of the group, reporting movements and actions to the group's conversations, and that Donohoe was following the orders of the group's senior leaders.
Donohue stood before the judge with his parents, grandparents, brother, aunts, uncles and girlfriend sitting in the gallery behind him. He told the judge he wanted to apologize to the entire country for his actions as well as to the law enforcement officers who were attacked.
