Microsoft's plan to end Windows 10 support is resulting in a lot of PC waste

Jakarta - Microsoft Corp's plan to end support for the Windows 10 operating system could result in around 240 million personal computers (PCs) being thrown away, potentially adding to waste in landfills, according to a Canalys Research report.

Electronic waste from these PCs can weigh an estimated 480 million kilograms, the equivalent of 320,000 cars.

While many PCs may continue to function for years after OS support ends, Canalys warns that demand for devices without security updates may be low.

Microsoft announced plans to provide security updates for Windows 10 devices through October 2028 at an undisclosed annual price.

If the pricing structure for extended Windows 10 support reflects past trends, switching to newer PCs may be more cost-effective, increasing the number of older PCs heading to landfills, Canalys said.

Microsoft aims to end support for Windows 10 by October 2025. The next-generation OS, which is expected to bring advanced artificial intelligence technology to PCs, has the potential to boost the sluggish PC market.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the environmental impact of disposing of devices that are not compatible with Windows 11. As quoted by Reuters, Thursday (21/12) local time.
