For the first time a new technology was applied in the 2024 Asian Cup

The Asian Football Confederation announced today, Tuesday, the implementation of a semi-automated offside system in the 2023 Asian Nations Cup finals, which Qatar will host during the period from January 12 to February 10, 2024.
This decision comes to enhance the application of video assistant referee technology, which will be fully implemented, following its successful implementation as of the quarter-finals of the last edition of the 2019 competition, according to the official website of the Asian Football Confederation.

The President of the Asian Football Confederation, Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, said in a statement to the Continental Confederation’s website: “Asian match referees have confirmed their place among the best referees in the world, and the application of the semi-automated offside system will contribute to helping them raise the level of standards to higher levels.”

He continued: “Applying semi-automated offside technology in the 2023 Asian Cup finals in Qatar is consistent with the AFC’s strategy of applying the latest technologies in the field of arbitration, and also embodies our will to create the ideal conditions for the success of the awaited Asian event.”

Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa added: “The Asian Football Confederation is determined to strengthen its leading position at the global refereeing level, and by adopting the latest technical initiatives, in addition to the full implementation of the video assistant referee system during the jewel of the Asian championships, we reaffirm the federation’s vision.” "Asian Football Association, in providing fertile ground to advance the Asian arbitration sector."

This will be the first time that this technology will be applied in AFC competitions, making it the first continental federation in the world to apply this system at the level of national team tournaments, confirming the AFC’s commitment to improving the accuracy and integrity of the decision-making process by referees.

The semi-automated infiltration system underwent extensive tests, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), which were approved by the International Football Association Board, in preparation for its implementation during the Asian Cup in Qatar.

The system is implemented using 13 specialized cameras, which are strategically distributed in order to determine the exact location of the ball and players on the field, and specifically the location of the player’s limbs and the rest of his body parts that affect the decision to calculate offside.

The application of this technology will facilitate the process of checking positions accurately and quickly, using artificial intelligence, and when a player is likely to be in an offside position by receiving the ball, an alert is sent to the video assistant referee, so that he can check the player’s position immediately.

By checking the offside lines set by this system at every moment, the final decision requires the approval of the video assistant referee, before the arena referee is notified, and the final decision is made on the field by the referee.

Once the decision-making process is completed, the same values that were used in the decision-making process will be used to create a three-dimensional design, to be displayed on the giant screens in the “Qatar 2023” Asian Cup stadiums, and the broadcasting channels will be provided with this design, ensuring that the event is watched.
