Experts explain the course of mycoplasma disease and the reasons for the difficulty of treating it

According to Professor Vladimir Chulanov, a leading expert on infectious diseases, Mycoplasma pneumoniae microorganisms often cause infection of the upper and lower respiratory tract in the autumn-winter period.

He says in an interview with the newspaper "Izvestia": "This is not a new cause of the disease, as this infection spreads greatly in the autumn and winter period. The course of the disease can be similar to the course of a common acute respiratory infection (cold), bronchitis, or pneumonia. It can be Anyone can get this disease, but young children are more susceptible to it.”

The expert points out that the course of the disease is rarely severe, and to diagnose it correctly, additional tests and studies must be performed.

He says: “Mycoplasma pneumonia is treated using antibacterial drugs that are available in all hospitals. Some of the increase in infections currently observed may be related to periodic increases in the long-term dynamics of mycoplasma infection.”

For her part, Dr. Olga Shubo, an infectious disease specialist, points out that mycoplasma infection differs from bacteria and viruses because it does not contain a cell wall in the membrane and easily penetrates cells, becomes a living organism inside cells and acquires resistance to antibiotics.

“In addition, mycoplasma becomes an intracellular parasite and can live in the body for many years, causing periodic exacerbations,” she says.

According to her, this infection has been known for a long time and is not a bacteria or a virus, and it spreads periodically in the period between two seasons, when the adaptation mechanism of many people is weak and they are more vulnerable to external influences.

She says: “Children are more susceptible to mycoplasma because they simply have not been infected with it yet. It can “settle” in the body, but a strong body will suppress it without revealing the clinical picture. If the body is weak, bronchopulmonary complications can occur.”
