The Mexican Seismological Service announced that an earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5.8 shook the center of the capital, Mexico City, on Thursday, while local authorities confirmed that they had not recorded any damage.
Agence France-Presse reported that residents took to the streets of the capital after the warning was issued shortly after 14:00 local time (20:00 pm GMT), as the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the state of Puebla, to the southwest of the huge city, which has a population of more than nine million. breeze.

For his part, the mayor of the capital, Martí Patrez, explained on the “X” platform: “There are no reports of any damage in Mexico City.”

The President of the Republic, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said: “It appears that the tremor was not very strong,” promising to provide more information.

Mexico is located between five tectonic plates, the movements of which make the country one of the most vulnerable to earthquakes in the world, especially on the Pacific coast to the west.

Part of Mexico City, especially the city centre, lies on the muddy floor of an ancient lake, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.
