WADA punishes the Olympic Council of Asia for allowing the North Korean flag to be raised

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced that it has fined the Olympic Council of Asia half a million US dollars for allowing North Korea to fly its flag at the recent Asian Games in China.

In 2021, WADA, which is based in Montreal, Canada, banned North Korea from hosting major international events, or raising its flag in international forums, with the exception of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, because it had not adopted an effective anti-doping program.

But WADA said that the North Korean flag flew throughout the 19th edition of the Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, last October, including the opening, closing, and medal distribution.

“Despite being reminded several times by WADA before and during the Games, the Olympic Council of Asia refused to comply,” the WADA statement said.

The Olympic Council of Asia did not comment on this decision, and it has three weeks to appeal it.
