The Russian Olympic Committee resorted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to appeal the suspension decision issued against it by the International Olympic Committee, the court announced Monday.
CAS said that the Russian Olympic Committee "requests that the contested decision be annulled, and that it be reintegrated as recognized by the International Olympic Committee, benefiting from all the rights and privileges granted by the Olympic Charter."
On October 12, the International Olympic Committee suspended Russia's membership "with immediate effect" because it included regional sports organizations subject to the Ukrainian Olympic Committee (Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporozhye).
The International Olympic Committee said, in a statement, “The unilateral decision taken by the Russian Olympic Committee on October 5, 2023, to include regional sports organizations subject to the Ukrainian Olympic Committee constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter, because it violates the territorial integrity of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.”
This decision automatically deprives the Russian Olympic Committee of international Olympic funding.
But it has no consequences for the possible participation of Russian athletes, under a neutral flag, in the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024 and the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026, which the IOC will decide “in due course.”
The Russian Olympic Committee denounced the suspension of its activities, saying at the time that “the International Olympic Committee has taken a new decision that is counterproductive and has clear political motives. The Russian athletes, most of whom were suspended from international participation without any reason, were not affected in any way by this step.”
