Peskov: Never before in the contemporary history of Europe has a military coup been considered a holiday

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed his regret that European Commission President von der Leyen considered the ten years that have passed since the Maidan coup in Ukraine to be “years of dignity.”

He said: "This is very unfortunate, because perhaps never in the contemporary history of Europe has a coup been considered a holiday."

He added: "They are unlikely to be happy, but such light populism in international affairs has now unfortunately become a fashion in Europe, and this does not bring anything good."

He continued: "A coup took place against the authorities and the legitimate government was overthrown, despite the guarantees provided by the European countries themselves that this would not happen. The coup in Ukraine led to the incitement of extremist nationalist sentiments at first, and later overt Nazi sentiments."

He said: "This led to the emergence of a regime in Kiev that turned out to be dangerous for us and part of its people, that is, the Russians. Unfortunately, it continues to cause the tragedies that we see every day."

It is noteworthy that “Euromaidan” is a huge protest that lasted for several months in central Kiev and other cities in Ukraine, and began on November 21, 2013 in response to the government’s suspension of preparations for signing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, justifying this step by the necessity of conducting a deeper study and taking a set of measures, Especially in light of the need to develop economic relations with Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Immediately after the announcement of the authorities’ decision, demonstrators began to go out to Independence Square in central Kiev, and settled there in a protest that over the weeks became punctuated by confrontations with security forces, before the crowds of protesters, with the support of armed extremist elements in their ranks and with political and moral support from Western countries, were able to overthrow the government. Legitimacy in February 2014.
