Italy reveals the reason for its refusal to submit a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup with Egypt and Saudi Arabia

The President of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, revealed that the reason behind the decision to refuse to submit a joint bid with Egypt and Saudi Arabia to host the 2030 World Cup is the deterioration of relations with Egypt.

Italian-Egyptian relations deteriorated, following the death of the young Italian student and researcher Giulio Regeni in the capital, Cairo, in 2016.

Football Italia quoted Gabriele Gravina as saying: “We realize that the joint file with Egypt and Saudi Arabia could have succeeded, but we rejected the proposal to host the 2030 World Cup, due to international problems related to the Regeni case, in addition to a difference in some of our values.” ".

Gabriele Gravina added that Italy cannot pretend that nothing happened.

It is noteworthy that the Italian student Giulio Regeni (28 years old), who was kidnapped by unknown assailants in January 2016 in Egypt, where he was conducting research to obtain a doctorate degree at the University of Cambridge, his body was found dumped, naked and bearing signs of severe torture, on the highway near Cairo. The killing of the Italian citizen caused tension in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
