Max Verstappen scores his 18th win of the season in Las Vegas
Jakarta : Red Bull racer Max Verstappen scored his 18th victory in the 2023 Formula 1 season following his first place finish at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in Las, Sunday WIB.
“What a great audience. I hope everyone enjoys it, as much as we did. "I can't wait to come back here next year and hopefully try to do the same thing," said Verstappen, quoted on the official F1 website.
Verstappen did not go through the 50 lap race easily.
Starting from second position, the Dutch racer initially started the race by taking pole position from Charles Leclerc.
However, when entering the eighth lap, Verstappen was given a five second penalty for making an aggressive maneuver at the start of the race when he made Leclerc leave the race track.
“It was a tough race. "I tried to do it at the start but I think we both braked quite late and I ran out of grip and we ended up a bit wide and the stewards gave me a penalty for that," said Verstappen.
“Then that put us a little bit behind, I had to pass a few more cars and safety cars so at that point there was already a lot going on in the race,” he added.
On the 25th lap, Verstappen made contact with Russell so the impact caused the Mercedes driver's car to lose its front wing.
Entering the 36th lap, a fierce competition broke out between Sergio Perez and Leclerc which the Ferrari driver then won to lead the race.
However, one lap later, Verstappen took over the lead of the race by passing his teammate Sergio Perez and Leclerc.
Verstappen then comfortably finished the race in first position, followed by Leclerc and Perez. The additional 25 points from this victory made Verstappen, who had won his third world title, unstoppable at the top of the standings with 549 points.
