The American accused of spying for Israel, Yonatan Pollard, spoke about the issue of normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
In an interview with the Hebrew channel "I24", Yonatan Pollard commented on the issue of Israeli-Saudi normalization, saying that he "believes that it is not an appropriate step and that he does not favor normalization at this stage because Saudi Arabia was in a permanent state of war with Israel."
Pollard added: "The first step must be for Saudi Arabia to announce that it will end this war now, and then the United States and Israel must make sure that the Palestinians have enough democracy to be independent in their own state and then discuss what should be discussed with Saudi Arabia regarding normalization."
Regarding the agreement with the Palestinians, Pollard said: “We are the ones who made peace difficult with the Palestinians.”
He said in another context: “A European journalist asked me about my opinion of Israel’s democracy. In my opinion, this is a difficult and complex question, and my answer is that compared to neighboring countries such as Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Iraq, Israel is of course a democracy.”
The American accused of spying for Israel, who is considered the most tense stage in American-Israeli relations, also touched on the current relationship between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying: “The American president treats some presidents inappropriately and this is unacceptable and not respectful enough, whether “I also have discussions and disagreements with Netanyahu, but the American president must act appropriately with every official, especially from the Middle East.”
Commenting on the “judicial amendments” plan promoted by the Netanyahu government, Pollard said: I am not worried about Israeli democracy, and here I support the amendments plan, and this is how the system I grew up in in America was. There were limits to the judges and they were part of the government, and it was a partner. In appointing judges and supervising them, and no one has ever exceeded the system of judges and the judiciary, There must be a separation of powers, but there must be provisions and laws for this separation.”
