Earlier, former Prime Minister of Israel and current Leader of Opposition Yair Lapid had expressed his gratitude to India on Monday for showing support towards his country. Hamas, the Palestinian extremist group ruling Gaza, launched a sudden and unprecedented attack on southern parts of Israel on Saturday morning. After this, Israel also retaliated by carrying out several air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

Pakistan : Who are the lawyers fighting the legal battle of PTI?

After Imran Khan's departure from power, while many changes were seen in his party, the faces of the lawyers around him have also been changing.

Since the arrest and jailing of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, the team of legal experts defending him has gained considerable prominence and media prominence, according to observers.

These lawyers have played a very important role in the legal battle or dozens of cases that Tehreek-e-Insaf is facing today. Some of them are familiar but some are new names.

After the success of the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan and his departure from power, while many changes were seen in his party, the faces of the political leaders and lawyers surrounding him have also been changing.

Young lawyers who are part of Tehreek-e-Insaf Lawyers Forum became active and managed to make their place in the presence of many senior lawyers.

After his first arrest on May 9 this year, many of his colleagues left politics or joined other parties after violent incidents across the country. Due to this change, some lawyers suddenly replaced the 'eminent lawyers'. Among these lawyers there were a few who fought their cases from the Supreme Court to the local courts.

Some of them are lawyers who came into the limelight after the PTI long march on May 25 last year when cases were registered against most of the party's leaders. Before knowing who these lawyers are, it is important to know how these lawyers are appointed.

According to Tehreek-e-Insaaf 's media cell, there are three procedures for hiring lawyers. First the lawyers who are part of the core committee, secondly those who are part of the Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF) wing and thirdly any important or eminent lawyer can be decided to be hired at any time.

PTI's core committee is chaired by senior lawyer Hamid Khan while other lawyers include Gohar Khan, Shoaib Shaheen, Babar Awan, Ali Zafar and Naeem Panjutha. Gauhar Khan and Shoaib Shaheen have also been appointed spokespersons of Tehreek-e-Insaf and its chairman Imran Khan.

Hailing from Dera Ghazi Khan, Shoaib Shaheen started practicing law in 1991. He appeared in court for the first time in 2014 as a lawyer on behalf of Imran Khan and fought the PTI chairman's case in the dharna case. Shaheen has fought 100 cases of this party, with many reported judgments.

Shoaib Shaheen was the President of Pakistan Services Bar Association from 2003 to 2005 and Vice Chairman of Islamabad Bar Council in 2015. He has also been an elected member of the Pakistan Bar Council from 2016 to 2020, while he has also been the President of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association from 2022 to 2023.

Speaking to Independent Urdu regarding the leaders or lawyers who left Imran Khan, he said: 'There were some moderates who enjoyed power and left. We stand and will continue to stand.'

Some pro-PTI lawyers, who were seen defending Imran Khan on television screens inside and outside the courts before the May 9 incidents, are no longer seen in public.

On the other hand, lawyers Gauhar Khan and Naeem Panjotha are also among those seen on media platforms for the past several months.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan from Buner district appeared to represent former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Islamabad High Court and the Election Commission of Pakistan. Gohar Khan, who started practicing law in 2004 after studying abroad, started representing Imran Khan in the courts from July 2022.

He used to get paid for cases of PTI leaders earlier, but since 2022 he has been working for the party without any remuneration.

Gohar Khan is the first lawyer who filed the first writ petition in the foreign funding case and also represented Imran Khan in the Tosha Khana case.

Talking to Independent Urdu, he said that Tosha Khana was such a historic case, which encouraged

Gohar Khan says that there is a need to bring change and reforms, I am with the struggle. We have to end this old system which requires reforms.'

Lawyer Naeem Haider Panjotha, who joined the Insaf Lawyers Forum in 2015, represents former Prime Minister Imran Khan in local courts. Naeem Haider from Sargodha city came to Islamabad in 2019.

After the PTI long march in 2022, when several FIRs were filed against party leaders, Naeem Panjutha represented the party leaders in many of these cases.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Naeem Panjutha said that 'Earlier we were working under the patronage of Shahid Gondal, who was the president of ILF. However, after his death, when we represented the party in cases related to the Long March, Imran Khan noticed us at that time.

Naeem Panjutha says he became a lawyer 'by accident'. 'I never thought that I would become a lawyer and represent Imran Khan.'

Senior lawyer Ali Zafar is also part of PTI's core committee. He is the son of eminent lawyer Syed Muhammad Zafar (SM Zafar) and like him, he has been the former Federal Minister for Law and Justice. Ali Zafar is a member of the Senate and also represents PTI in the Supreme Court.

Barrister Ali Zafar from Lahore has also been the President of Supreme Court Bar Association in 2015. Since joining the PTI in 2019, he has been representing the party in the Supreme Court in various cases, especially cases related to constitutional issues.

Prominent lawyer and politician Zaheeruddin Babar Awan, who left Pakistan Peoples Party and joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 2017, is part of the core committee of the party. He has also been a former federal minister for law and justice and a senator.

Babar Awan, who hails from Kahota in Rawalpindi district, has been seen representing the PTI in various cases, but he and Ali Zafar have not been seen representing the PTI or its leaders in courts in recent times.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Hamid Khan was appointed as the head of PTI's legal team last month, he was also the party's first lawyer in the historic Panama case.

Hamid Khan, who joined PTI in 1996, joined the party after being invited by Imran Khan and wrote the party's first constitution and its objectives with his own hands. He has been representing the party in the Supreme Court in recent times.

Sher Afzal Marwat from Laki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has also been fighting the cases of Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders. 

Sher Afzal Marwat, who formally started advocacy in 2004, joined the party in 2017. He was also a member of the Core Committee earlier, but is no longer a part of it.

He also challenged Imran Khan's imprisonment in Attock Jail and is also a part of the cipher case team. He has also appeared as counsel in the cases of PTI leaders Shandana Gulzar and Shehryar Afridi.
