Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, 23, clocked 2 hours and 35 seconds on the course, moving closer to the elusive 2 hour mark.
The 23-year-old fell behind the current world record at the halfway point, 25km and 30km, but picked up the pace at the end to make history in Chicago.
The young runner is without a coach and has only run two marathons before.
“I didn't have a world record in mind today, but I knew that one day, once, I would be the world record holder,” Kiptum said after the race. “I feel so happy.”
Kelvin Kiptum broke the marathon world record in spectacular fashion on Sunday in Chicago, knocking 34 seconds off the previous mark set by fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge.
Sifan Hassan wins the women's category
Among the ladies, the Dutch Sifan Hassan achieved a major performance during the 2023 American marathon.
Hassan won the women's race in 2 h 13 min 44 sec.
Six weeks after being a medalist at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest (over 1500 and 5000 m), the athlete crushed the Chicago marathon on Sunday, signing the second best time in history.
Ronaldo's famous celebration appears in American football
The American Football League match between the Jacksonville Cougars and the Buffalo Bills witnessed a special celebration for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, the Saudi Al-Nasr football player.
This came after Josh Allen succeeded in scoring for the Buffalo Bills at the beginning of the second quarter, after they were trailing by 11 points to nothing.
Immediately after scoring the points, Stefon Diggs celebrated in Ronaldo's famous "C" SIUUU style, which many sports stars around the world have begun to imitate while celebrating goals.
Several American Football League matches are being held in the English capital, London, during the current period, including yesterday’s match, Sunday.
It is noteworthy that Ronaldo is having a distinguished season with Al-Nasr, where he is the top scorer in the Saudi League with ten goals.
