The organizers of the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert asked tens of thousands of visitors to save on food, water and fuel, after a rainstorm hit the region.
Festival participants were drowned in mud, and event organizers prevented vehicles from entering or leaving the area, after it was flooded by torrential rain on Friday evening.
Some festival-goers walked miles to get to the main roads, while others hoped the expected storm would not exacerbate bad conditions in the area.
Hannah Borhorn, who is attending the festival for the first time, told CNN yesterday, Saturday, that the desert sands have turned into thick mud, and water pools are everywhere. People in the area had to wrap garbage bags around their shoes to avoid getting their feet stuck in the mud, while others walked around barefoot.
Organizers on the "X" platform said the gate and airport to Black Rock City, a remote area in northwest Nevada where the festival is held annually, remains closed and no driving is allowed in or out of town except for emergency vehicles.
More than 70,000 people attend the week-long event, and this year it takes place from August 28 to September 4. It is unclear how many people were stranded due to the weather.
For its part, the National Weather Service said that rain and thunderstorms are expected to return on Saturday evening and continue throughout Sunday, with temperatures ranging from highs in the 70s to overnight lows of 49 degrees.
Meteorological reports indicate that up to 0.8 inches of rain will fall in the area from Friday morning to Saturday morning, which is equivalent to the amount of rain that falls from 2 to 3 months in this place during the same period every year. Which could lead to flooding in the dry Nevada desert.
The Bureau of Land Management, which has jurisdiction over the festival grounds, advised people heading to Burning Man to "turn around and go home", as roads remain closed in the area.
"The rains over the past 24 hours have created a situation that requires a complete halt to vehicular movement. More rains are expected over the next few days, and conditions are not expected to improve enough to allow vehicles to enter the city," the office's statement read.
The festival is held every summer in Black Rock, a temporary city created annually specifically for the festival. It includes planning, emergency, safety and health infrastructure services.
It is famous for the closing event in which a large wooden token of a man is ignited. The event attracts tens of thousands each year and, in the past, many celebrities from Sean Diddy Combs to Katy Perry have attended.
Tens of thousands of attendees travel to and from the city along a two-lane highway to reach the festival, which was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Burning Man participants dedicate their time to art and community building. Among the activities held at the festival are learning how to spin fire, dance on a pole, make jewelry or make statues.
