A retired army officer will now help the Manipur government deal with the unrest in the state. More than 170 people have lost their lives in the state in the last two months. According to the information, the retired army officer had played an important role in India's surgical attacks in Myanmar in 2015. The Manipur government on August 24 appointed Colonel (retd) Nectar Sanjenbam as Senior Superintendent of the Manipur Police Department for a tenure of five years.
The army officer has served in 21 Para (Special Forces) and was awarded the second highest gallantry award – the Kirti Chakra – and the third highest gallantry award – the Shaurya Chakra. An order issued by Manipur's Joint Secretary (Home) on August 28 said the appointment was made following a cabinet decision of June 12. The Shaurya Chakra citation for the awarded officer states that he "demonstrated meticulous planning, exemplary gallantry, bold and courageous action under the most challenging circumstances."
This appointment has come when the N Biren Singh government and the Center are making every effort to prevent incidents of violence in the northeastern state. At least a dozen people have been killed and over 30 injured in incidents of firing and blasts in the border areas between the Meitei-dominated valley areas and the Kuki-dominated hills in the past five days. The unrest was sparked by an order by the Manipur High Court asking the state government to recommend Scheduled Tribe status for the Meetis.
To counter this, the All Tribal Students' Union called for a peaceful protest on 3 May. The protest turned violent when clashes broke out between the Kukis and Meitais near the border between Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, leading to unrest that left several dead and thousands displaced.
