The European Football Association (UEFA) announced, this evening, Thursday, the winner of the European Player of the Year award during the last football season (2022-2023).
The Norwegian star, Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, won the award for the best player in Europe last season, beating his teammate, the Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne, and the Argentine star Lionel Messi, who moved from the French team Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami.
Haaland was crowned the Premier League's top scorer with 36 goals in his first season, breaking the record set by duo Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, each scoring 34 goals in the 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 seasons, when there were 42 games instead of 38.
The Norwegian star scored 52 goals in all tournaments, and won the Best Player award in the English Premier League and Best Player in Manchester City for this season, in addition to the Best Player of the Year award presented by the Professional Footballers Association, after his exceptional first season with Manchester City, and winning The historical trilogy.
Formula 1 : Hamilton & Russell extends contract with Mercedes until 2025
Jakarta - Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on Thursday officially extended their contracts with the Mercedes racing team until 2025.
"Every day we dream of being the best and we have dedicated the last decade together to achieve that goal," said Hamilton, quoted from the official Formula 1 website, Thursday.
"Being at the top doesn't happen overnight or in a short time, it takes commitment, hard work and dedication, and it is an honor to succeed in making history with this extraordinary team," he added.
Hamilton and Mercedes' partnership has now entered its 11th season since the British driver joined in 2013 and set record after record with the team nicknamed the Silver Arrows.
Hamilton is a seven-time world champion — equaling Michael Schumacher's record, then he also collected 104 poles and 103 race wins.
“We have learned from every success and also from every setback. We keep chasing our dreams, we keep fighting no matter what the challenge is and we will win again," said Hamilton.
Agreeing, Russell said he had grown with the team since the junior driver program in 2017.
"After taking the Mercedes racing seat last year, I want to appreciate the trust and confidence given by Toto (Wolff) and the team members other to me. Reaching pole position and my first race win last year is an unforgettable feeling,” said Russell.
"Their loyalty, vision and hard work are very inspiring," he added.
Russell said he and the team had made some significant strides over the past 18 months and were getting stronger as a team. He is also excited to continue building this momentum as they enter 2024 and 2025.
Mercedes Team Boss Toto Wolff believes that continuing the partnership with the two British drivers was an easy decision.
“We have the strongest pair on the grid and both riders play an important role in the team to move us forward. The strength and stability they provide will be the cornerstone of our future success,” said Wolff.
