Beirut: At least eight fighters were killed in Russian air strikes, at dawn on Monday, targeting a military point belonging to “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) in northwestern Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The observatory said: “Russian warplanes targeted a military headquarters of the “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” on the outskirts of the western city of Idlib and killed eight of them.”
“Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” controls large areas of Idlib governorate and adjacent areas in the governorates of Latakia, Hama and Aleppo.
An AFP correspondent in the area said that the bombing targeted an area on the outskirts of the city of Idlib, where there are swimming pools and a summer park.
He added, “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham surrounded the area after the raids.”
Since March 6, 2020, a cease-fire has been in force in areas in Idlib and its environs, announced by Moscow, Damascus's ally, and Turkey, which supports the fighting factions, three months after a massive attack launched by Damascus in the region.
The region witnesses from time to time mutual shelling by several parties, as well as raids by the regime forces and Russia, although the ceasefire is still holding to a large extent.
Since 2011, Syria has been witnessing a bloody conflict that has killed more than half a million people, caused massive damage to infrastructure and led to the displacement of millions inside and outside the country.

Jerusalem: Traces resembling the six-pointed star of David appeared on the face of a Palestinian who was arrested by the Israeli police from his home in the Shuafat refugee camp, north of East Jerusalem.
In the middle of the week, the Israeli police arrested Orwa Sheikh Ali (22 years old) from his home in the Shuafat refugee camp, north of East Jerusalem, and the Israeli Magistrates Court in Jerusalem released him, on Sunday, to a home prison.
The Israeli news site Ynet said that Sheikh Ali “claimed that the Star of David symbol was branded on his face during his arrest by police officers on charges of drug trafficking.”
The site added: “The judge of the Israeli Magistrate’s Court in Jerusalem, Adi Bar Tal, explained that by looking at the photos of the suspect, “it became clear that the arrest was accompanied by the use of extreme violence.”
And the Israeli police claimed, in a written statement, a copy of which was received by Anadolu Agency: “While the police officers were searching the house of a suspect in the Shuafat camp, substances suspected of being dangerous drugs were seized in large quantities that were not for self-consumption.”
She added to her allegations by saying: “At a certain point, the suspect began violently attacking the police officers, resisting his arrest, and due to his violent resistance during his arrest, the police officers had to use reasonable force to complete his arrest.”
The occupation police admitted: “The suspect has bruises that resemble a triangle, and it appears that they were caused by a piece of a police officer’s clothing,” referring to his shoelaces.
However, Dr. Avner Rosengarten, head of the Institute of Forensic Sciences, a private organization that provides legal expertise, said Sunday that there was no match between the shoelace and the mark on the suspect's face.
"It's not this shoe, it's not the shoelace, it looks like the marks were made by a metal tool," he told the Ynet news site.
Rosengarten said he could not definitively say that the mark on the suspect's face was the Star of David, despite the similarities.
16 policemen participated in the arrest, but the police said that “the cameras in their possession were not working,” without explaining the reasons.
The Israeli website pointed out that Sheikh Ali “alleged that during his arrest, the officers beat him all over his body, and covered his face with a piece of cloth.”
