Federal officials said Thursday that at least 100 US firefighters will arrive in Nova Scotia over the weekend to help battle out-of-control wildfires that have forced nearly 21,000 people from their homes since Sunday. About 200 firefighters from South Africa are likely to head to Alberta, although officials say the wildfire situation in the country is precarious. The arriving firefighters will join hundreds of colleagues from other countries, including Australia and New Zealand, who are already in Canada fighting the blazes. In Nova Scotia, two large fires that are still out of control, one in the suburb of Halifax and the other in the southwestern corner of the province, have already destroyed at least 200 homes and cottages. Officials say that the number of fires so far this year is almost equal to the 10-year average, but the land area that these fires devoured (about 27,000 square kilometers) is unprecedented. The fires have not resulted in deaths or injuries so far.
