"Globally, currently Indonesia's sharia economic indicators continue to improve by successfully being ranked fourth in the world. We as a big nation need to reposition our country's role as a global leader in the world of the halal industry," said the Minister of Industry in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.
As a home for Muslims with a population of 241.7 million people in 2022 or 87 percent of the total population, the spending of Indonesian Muslims on halal products and services is projected to increase by 14.96 percent in 2025, namely 281.6 billion US dollars, which makes Indonesia the largest consumer of the halal market in the world or 11.34 percent of global halal expenditure.
According to the Minister of Industry, the growth of the sharia economy and the halal industry is also getting stronger supported by several main drivers, including the large Muslim population, increasing awareness of Islamic ethical values related to the consumption of halal and thoyyib products, as well as the increasing number of national strategies and programs being implemented . dedicated to the development of halal products and services.
Bank Indonesia estimates that the priority sectors of the Halal Value Chain (HVC) in the country, namely agriculture, halal food and beverages, Muslim fashion and Muslim-friendly tourism will grow by 4.5-5.3 percent in 2023, which is projected to be able to sustain more than 25 percent of the national economy.
The Indonesian government has also developed various strategies to capture potential opportunities in the halal industry market.
One way is to optimize the demographic bonus to open up opportunities for national halal industry players to increase production, in order to fill domestic and foreign demand.
"In addition, the Indonesian people must also be directed to use halal products made in their own country," said the Minister of Industry.
The Ministry of Industry also continues to be committed to the success of the halal program, including by staging mandatory halal products, as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 39 of 2021 concerning Implementation of the Halal Product Guarantee Field.
The Ministry of Industry has also included Empowerment of the Halal Industry as part of the National Industrial Policy (KIN) stipulated in Presidential Regulation number 74 of 2022 concerning National Industrial Policy for 2020-2024.
In accordance with the Presidential Decree, the policy on empowering the halal industry is carried out through compiling halal industry policies, strengthening halal industry infrastructure, implementing the Halal Product Guarantee System (SJPH), providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for the halal industry, international cooperation in the framework of accessing halal raw materials, expanding market access, including recognition of national halal certification through Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with other countries, literacy, education, campaigns, outreach, and promotions to increase the socialization of the halal industry through awards and national halal industry festivals.
With experience as a leading sectorin implementing the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for industry, the Ministry of Industry believes that it will play a major role in the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) in the future.
