Monaco Grand Prix : Charles Leclerc said Ferrari's performance was lagging behind its rivals in F1

Jakarta - Charles Leclerc said Ferrari's performance was quite behind its competitors in the 2023 Formula 1 season after finishing sixth at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend and receiving a penalty which he regretted.

"We have a lot of work to do to restore form because at the moment we are too far behind," said Leclerc, quoted from Formula 1's official website, Tuesday.

The racer from Monaco considered that there were too many problems during the race in his hometown, starting from mechanical problems, strategic mistakes, to collisions. His target to be on the podium in Monte Carlo was dashed because of the piling up problems.

Meanwhile, Leclerc was penalized three starting positions after being caught blocking the pace of McLaren driver Lando Norris during the qualifying session.

"Yes, after qualifying there was a three grid penalty and there was nothing I could do," said Leclerc.

Leclerc admitted that he really wanted to race in Monaco properly, however, there were penalties to the challenge of drastic weather changes, putting him under real pressure.

"The speed (of the car) was not good at that time. I mean, actually (the speed) was quite good (on) hard tires. It was good there, but nothing could be done (in other conditions)," said Leclerc.

Meanwhile, the penalty was against him because the narrow and winding streets of Monte Carlo offered few opportunities to catch up. Leclerc then gave a dismal assessment of Ferrari's current performance level.

"We are not happy with where we are," said Leclerc, as team-mate Carlos Sainz followed him to an eighth-placed finish.

Ferrari, on the other hand, leave Monaco sitting in fourth in the constructors' championship behind Mercedes, Aston Martin and Red Bull. While Sainz and Leclerc are sixth and seventh respectively in the championship or driver standings.
