Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his regret that relations with neighboring Morocco had reached a "point of no return."
This came in an interview with the Qatari Al-Jazeera channel, excerpts of which were published on Tuesday evening, commenting on the severed relations with Morocco.
Tebboune said that relations had "reached a point of no return," and expressed his regret that the relationship between the two neighboring countries had reached this level, saying that Algeria's position was "a reaction."
In August 2021, Algeria announced the severance of its diplomatic relations with Morocco, due to what it said were hostile acts from Rabat against it, followed by a complete closure of airspace to Moroccan civil and military aircraft.
Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, Tebboune said that his country "is qualified to play the role of mediator, as it is one of the countries that has sufficient credibility for mediation."
He stressed that his visit to Russia is still ongoing, and will take place next May at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Diplomatic crisis with France
As for the diplomatic crisis with France, Tebboune said that relations with Paris are "fluctuating", but confirmed the return of the Algerian ambassador to France within days after he was summoned for consultations weeks ago in protest against the deportation of an activist wanted by the judiciary to France.
And in early February, Algeria summoned its ambassador to Paris for consultations, due to the participation of diplomats in smuggling an activist to France via Tunisia, which was subject to judicial control in her country.
Regarding the crisis with Spain, the Algerian president stated that the new Spanish government's position on the Western Sahara conflict is "individual and biased from the Sanchez government."
He said that this was "by secret actions that do not relieve it of its responsibilities, because the Spanish government has forgotten that it is the former colonial power of Western Sahara and its responsibility still exists."
In March 2022, Algeria recalled its ambassador to Madrid for consultations, and he did not return to his post until March 22. Later, Algeria announced the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighborliness with Spain signed in 2002.
