According to a report by the Wall Street Journal , the United States has obtained information that the Russian Wagner Group is cooperating with armed groups in Chad to implement a plan to get rid of the transitional president of Chad, Mohamed Idriss Deby, and seize power.
The newspaper quoted American, African and European officials as saying that Washington had informed the authorities in Chad of intelligence reports stating that the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was cooperating with Chadian militants to destabilize the transitional authority in the country, and possibly to kill the Chadian president.
The Wall Street Journal indicated that Chad is a major ally of the West in the fight against terrorism.
A senior US official told the newspaper that Prigozhin offered the Chadian militants financial and operational support to implement the plan, which may include the liquidation of the transitional president.
The newspaper quoted a senior African official as saying that Chad has taken note of these reports of a threat affecting its government, its president and other senior officials, stressing that it deals with the matter very seriously.
This news comes at a time when the United States is working on a strategy to expel Wagner from Africa, after the Russian group has gained a presence and influence in several countries in the recent period.
