Peshawar, Pakistan: At least 28 people were killed and 150 injured in an explosion inside a mosque at a Pakistani police headquarters on Monday, the governor of Peshawar province said.
The police said that the mosque is located near a residential compound for its members and was home to about 260 people at the time of the explosion.
An eyewitness told local news station Geo TV, "It (the explosion) took place during prayer. A two-storey building collapsed,” he said, adding that he was just outside the mosque when the blast occurred.
"We have received 19 dead and 90 injured... Many are in critical condition," said Muhammad Asim, a spokesman for a hospital in Peshawar.
The police indicated that more dead and injured were buried under the rubble.
Footage broadcast by state broadcaster BTV showed police and some residents rushing to remove rubble and debris, carrying the injured on their shoulders.
"Part of the building collapsed and many are believed to be under rubble," said police official Sikandar Khan.
